Swansea road repairs budget set for £1.1m boost

COMMUNITIES across Swansea are set for a million-pound boost in road repair work over the coming year.

More community road repair projects by the council’s PATCH repair team are set to be carried out thanks to a £1.1m grant from the Welsh Government.

A report to Cabinet next week says the cash will bring to £6.6m the total fund being spent tackling the backlog of road repairs in Swansea.

Mark Thomas, Cabinet Member for Environment Enhancement and Infrastructure Management, said the extra cash would be welcome.

He said: “Despite the pandemic our PATCH and pothole teams have been working relentlessly to carry out road repairs across our communities and keep traffic on the move.

“In the last few months we’ve done more than 20 community road re-surfacing projects on top of the work being done by PATCH and pothole repair teams.

“If the grant is agreed by Cabinet we’ll look at our five-year rolling programme of road and carriageway repairs and bring some of them forward for completion.”

Cllr Thomas said: “In April alone we filled in 473 potholes, 98% of them within 48 hours of being reported.

“There is always more to do so the extra funds from Welsh Government will help us make a difference.”
