Derwendeg Primary School has recently celebrated its 100th birthday. The school arranged for a variety of activities to take place for staff and pupils in honour of the anniversary.

The children celebrated with a ‘Wow day’ with each class dressing up in fashion from different decades. Each class has been allocated a decade to focus their learning on, investigating the question – ‘Which was the best decade to attend Derwendeg Primary?’

The children will be celebrating for the whole of the Summer term. Other celebrations will include:

    • Burying a time capsule within the school grounds to document how life looked in 2021.
    • A competition for the pupils to design a special 100th year logo; the winning design will be featured on a commemorative mug to be gifted to all of the staff and pupils.
    • Pupils working with an artist to produce a commemorative piece of artwork to be installed outside of the school.
    • Learning about the history of the school and its special memories.
    • Pupils will be working with a music company to write and perform a special school song summarising the last 100 years.
    • Pupils creating a commemorative book and website to document the history of the school.
    • A community celebration when covid restrictions allow.

Derwendeg Primary School was officially opened on Monday April 18th, 1921 by Mr Jonah Evans and Mrs Hannah Davies. It originally cost £9,373 to erect and held a capacity of 250 children.

Lynsey Wangiel, Head Teacher of Derwendeg Primary School said, “Derwendeg Primary School is, and always has been, a very special school at the heart of the community. We are very excited to be celebrating our 100th birthday this year and learning all about the school’s rich history.”

Cllr Ross Whiting, Cabinet Member for Learning and Achievement commented, “It’s wonderful to see that pupils and staff have had great fun learning about Derwendeg Primary School’s history.

“I hope that future pupils can have just as much fun opening the time capsule that has been buried on the school grounds. Happy 100th Birthday Derwendeg Primary School.”
