Redrow South Wales has brought together graduates from across the UK to help a local Cardiff primary school in need of bit of a boost. Ysgol Coed y Gof is closely located to Redrow’s Cae St Fagans development at Plasdŵr.
As part of the Redrow Graduate Programme, a team from the most recent intake will be spending time at Ysgol Gymraeg Coed y Gof – a Welsh medium primary school in Pentrebane – helping to renovate their outdoor learning areas, which are in much need of repair.
The graduates have been set the task of renovating these areas and also of engaging as much as possible with the school children; running various workshops during the summer term including ‘Lego House’ building, brick painting and disk decorating – all of which will then feature in the play areas.
During the summer holidays, graduates will be on site for a week working on each of the five zones within their redevelopment plans which include new rubber bound bark chipping, blackboard walls, and Wendy houses, as well as literacy, numeracy and sports corners.
Zone five will undertake the biggest change and be transformed into a new sensory garden for the pupils comprising of a sensory path, log seating, and herb garden.
Speaking about the Redrow team’s efforts, Ysgol Gymraeg Coed Y Gof Year 2 teacher Huw Darch said:
“We are very excited about the work being carried out in our school by the Redrow graduates. The workshops will ensure that all children in the school are engaged with the main project of rejuvenating our outdoor learning areas at an early stage.
“From our very first meeting, we feel like the school has resonated with all staff at Redrow. They have understood our needs in order to achieve a truly collaborative project which will benefit our pupils for the foreseeable future.
“We believe these great new resources will enable us to directly respond to Estyn’s ‘Active and Experiential Learning’ document. It will ensure our pupils have the very best outdoor learning areas, helping them become independent, creative and lifelong learners.”
Redrow graduate Will Morgan added:
“We’re all really excited by this project – Cae St Fagans is such a family friendly development and helping a local school in need of support just seemed the perfect project with which to get involved.
“The children have been great and are already so involved following the first workshop – we’re so looking forward to seeing these plans unfold and giving the pupils the best start to next term in their brand new outdoor learning environments.”
