New archways to link Copr Bay with Swansea seafront

A new link made of up three archways is being constructed as part of Swansea’s emerging Copr Bay district.

Aimed at generating better connections between the city centre and the waterfront, the link will lead from the Swansea Arena site to the Maritime Quarter.

The archways replace a narrow tunnel that was in place there beforehand.

It’s among the new features of the £135m Copr Bay phase one district being developed by Swansea Council and advised by development managers RivingtonHark.

As well as the Swansea Arena, the district also includes a 1.1-acre coastal park, the new bridge over Oystermouth Road, new homes, new car parking and new spaces for leisure and hospitality businesses.

Cllr Rob Stewart, Swansea Council Leader, said: “The new archways will generate better links between the city centre and the maritime quarter and seafront, while also improving the look and feel of the area by replacing a fairly dark tunnel that used to be in place there.

“It’s one feature of a district that’s worth hundreds of jobs and £17.1m a year to Swansea.

“Copr Bay construction continues to make great progress every day as we head towards the completion of a major scheme that’s already acting as a catalyst for further investment and economic growth.”

Construction of Copr Bay phase one – led by Buckingham Group Contracting Limited – is due for completion later this year, with the arena, to be run by the Ambassador Theatre Group (ATG), opening its doors in early 2022.

The arena feature of Copr Bay phase one is being part-funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal as part of the Swansea City and Waterfront Digital District project that also includes the new office development soon being constructed at 71/72 The Kingsway.

The bridge over Oystermouth Road is part-funded by the Welsh Government’s Active Travel fund.
