Chamber event to get firms on path to net zero

SMEs in Wales are being encouraged to make net zero action a priority for their businesses.

Net zero is a commitment to ensure a balance between greenhouse gas emissions put into the atmosphere and those removed from it.

Businesses can take action towards net zero by reducing the emissions that a company makes directly, indirectly and through its supply chain.

While Wales hopes to achieve net zero by 2050, the Welsh Government has set a target for the public sector to reach this commitment by 2030 in a decade of critical action. Many large corporations have set similar targets, impacting SMEs within their supply chain who may need to demonstrate their own net zero journey for procurement.

To help businesses on their sustainability journeys, Chambers Wales South East, South West and Mid is bringing together industry experts on February 17 to explore the importance of net zero, the benefits of reducing your carbon footprint and how it can boost your business.

Hosted by Professor Paul Harrison, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Innovation and Engagement at the University of South Wales, the online event will discuss supply chains, employee retention and funding through the lens of net zero while also detailing the support available for SMEs.

The expert panel will include Rob Allison, Director at Auditel; Randall Edwards, Director of Corporate Finance at Aspen Waite; Howard Gray, Director of Business Consulting, Sustainability and Climate Change at CGI; and Catherine Westoby, Net Zero Engagement Lead for the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Professor Paul Harrison said: “Achieving net zero is a necessity, not a choice. Businesses across all sectors will play a vital role in helping the nation reach its goal by 2050 or earlier, but it can be difficult to know where and how to start the net zero journey.

“There are so many exciting opportunities for firms who embrace sustainability, and this event will highlight the impact of net zero practices on the issues that matter to businesses.”
