Young people in Cardiff will soon have the opportunity to train to become qualified leisure centre staff thanks to a new partnership between Urdd Gobaith Cymru and Better Cardiff.

Both organisations have joined forces to recruit young people to its new apprenticeship scheme with, initially, six vacancies being available at six leisure centres Better operates in the city including Llanishen, Western and Star Centres.

The 18 month programme, aimed at 16-25 year olds, is designed to provide young people with the opportunity to learn key skills in managing all aspects of aquatic fitness and exercise activity at the centres. They will learn how to be a lifeguard, lead a fitness class and teach swimming alongside aspects of managing these activities.

The successful applicants will work towards Level 2 Apprenticeship in Activity Leadership and will benefit from practical on-the-job training, mentoring and coaching. Once this programme is completed there will be a career pathway with accompanying qualifications to become Leisure Manager for those who wish to progress.

Applicants will be able to apply online on the jobs and careers section on the website: better.org.uk

Catrin Davis, Head of Apprenticeships for Urdd Gobaith Cymru, said:

“The partnership with Better Cardiff is extremely important to us as an apprenticeship provider and a key step as we extend our provision of Welsh-medium and bilingual apprenticeships. We are really looking forward to seeing the young people develop their skills and start their exciting careers in the sector.”

Rhys Jones, Head of Service at Better Cardiff, said:

“We are delighted to be partnering with The Urdd to provide these fantastic opportunities to join the Leisure Industry in Cardiff. As we now enter the recovery phase from the Covid-19 pandemic, it is important to plan for the future and promote the many exciting opportunities for young people looking to begin their first steps into working in the sport and leisure sector. We are seeing a growth in fitness and leisure activity across the board and there is a need to recruit suitable young people to meet the demand. This multi-level programme offers young people the opportunity to kick-start a career in a variety of fields by giving the opportunity to complete qualifications in life saving, swimming, fitness, and customer service over the 18-month period.”

The closing date for the Apprentice vacancies will be Sunday June 5th.
