Once completed, this will become a meeting point for different modes of transport, creating a hub for sustainable forms of travel.
Adjoining the Council’s Grade II listed Docks Office building, the project is being delivered in partnership with the Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) and Welsh Government.
It will connect train, bus, cycle and taxi services as well as offering close by park and ride facilities.
Cllr Bronwen Brooks, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: “This is an ambitious, forward-thinking project, originally identified in the Local Development Plan, that can help make sustainable travel more comfortable, convenient, and appealing.
“Linking different modes of public transport together in this way offers an attractive, environmentally friendly alternative to travelling by car.
“The Council is committed to addressing the Climate Emergency and this scheme aligns perfectly with our Project Zero initiative to make the Authority carbon neutral by 2030.
“It can also support the economic development of Barry and the wider Cardiff City region, helping those seeking access to employment and education opportunities.”
Amey Consulting designed and will be project managing the development, while contractors Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK began phase one of the project earlier this month.
That will see a bus and taxi interchange located to the south of the station in an area of car park, with work expected to be finished by May.
Planning Permission for the development was granted last year and a wide range of stakeholders were consulted before work commenced. These included local businesses, service providers and community organisations.

“These transformational schemes are bringing a level of connectivity that will pay dividends for current citizens and future generations – in terms of a greener environment, greater life opportunities and more prosperous communities.
“Ultimately, the Barry Docks Interchange represents an important part of the Cardiff Capital Region vision for an integrated transport system that will make South East Wales one of the most competitive and future-proofed Regions in the UK.”
