Visitors to Caerphilly castle and the surrounding area are being reminded to take care following confirmed cases of Avian Influenza among dead birds found at the site.
A number of dead swans and geese were found on land around Caerphilly Castle before Christmas.
The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA – part of DEFRA) carried out testing as part of their Avian Influenza Wild Bird Surveillance programme and have confirmed the presence of Avian Influenza.
APHA work closely with Public Health Wales to monitor public health risks related to avian influenza and their advice remains that the risk to the public is very low. The key advice is not to touch sick or dead birds. To report dead birds please call the DEFRA helpline (03459 33 55 77).
Additional signage is being erected on land around the castle advising the following:
- Keep to the footpath
- Keep dogs on leads
- Do not feed wild waterfowl
- Do not pick up or touch dead or sick wild birds
- Do not touch wild bird feathers or surfaces contaminated with wild bird droppings
- If you keep poultry or other birds, wash your hands and clean and disinfect your footwear before tending to your birds
