    Free programme coming to Cardiff to support carers

    Macmillan is working in partnership with Ray of Light Wales to host a free programme in Cardiff, to support anyone caring for someone with cancer or any other long-term illness, and help them manage the impact of their day to day responsibilities.

    The new programme, called Time and Space, is adapted from Macmillan’s HOPE self-management programme, and will be run by facilitators from Ray of Light Wales, and is designed to support all those in a caring role, whether this is paid or unpaid.

    Topics the programme will focus on include managing fatigue and stress, communication, managing emotions, goal setting and talking with professionals.

    The programme will run over two sessions on Monday 17 and Monday 24 September from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at Velindre Cancer Centre.

    Sue Norris, Chair of Ray of Light Wales says:

    “You may not see yourself as a carer, but as someone who is simply helping out and providing care as part of your relationship or friendship.

    “We encourage anyone providing emotional and practical support to someone with a cancer diagnosis or any long-term illness to sign up to this free programme.

    “Time and Space is an opportunity for people in a caring role to learn methods to help them live their lives as carers and to meet others who are in a similar position.

    “We understand that signing up to a course may be overwhelming to some people, but the programme is designed to support and encourage.”

    Richard Pugh, Head of Services for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales, said:

    “We at Macmillan know that caring for someone with a cancer diagnosis can have an impact on people’s health, wellbeing, working life and relationships.

    “There are 370,000 carers in Wales¹ who may not be receiving any support themselves to help them manage the day to day care that they provide.

    “Macmillan is pleased to be working with Ray of Light Wales this year to offer the programme to people caring for those with cancer, or any other long-term illness, in Wales.”
