South Wales-born, London-trained hairstylist Byron Suart has teamed up with a popular Cardiff hostel to open the city’s first ‘cocktail barber’

Byron Suart Barbers is based in the recently revamped BunkHouse Hostel and Bar on St Mary’s Street and launched on 12th April 2024. As a fully licenced venue, guests can enjoy a beer or signature cocktail with their beard trim and fade.

Byron made his name cutting for Rush, Sassoon and HOB in Camden. He was part of the international art team for Select Professional in Madrid and Florence and is currently lead hairstylist for sustainable fashion brand Vin and Omi.

He has now returned home to start his own salon journey in the city centre, offering sharp cuts and styling in the heart of Cardiff’s music scene.

Byron said: “After spending the last 10 years working in London, travelling the globe, and defining new trends, I can’t wait to launch my own business in my hometown.

“I specialise in precision barbering and take inspiration from 50’s and 60’s icons like Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. By giving those classic styles a modern twist, I hope to make an imprint on the barbering scene that nurtured me and bring a bit of Camden to Cardiff.”

Byron’s creative vision was the perfect fit for BunkHouse, whose team are passionate about building an inclusive and multifunctional space in the city centre for everyone to enjoy, from day to night.

BunkHouse owner Matteo Cutrupi said: “Byron is a friend of the bar and we knew he was cutting hair. I mentioned to him that I was thinking about pop-up barbers, and he said this was an idea he wanted to work on a couple years back but didn’t get the chance to. It was great timing for us both!

“I think this collaboration will really open up doors for BunkHouse. It creates a multi-purpose space which allows those not necessarily looking to drink to still come down and use the space, which will help us to continue growing the community and culture we want.”

Byron added: “This is a collaboration based on friendship and a shared vision. I’ve been coming to BunkHouse for years – it was my must-visit every time I came back to Cardiff. Matteo has really shaped and grown the business since taking over in 2023 and we are excited to see where this new partnership takes us.”
