A Ruthin landmark is blooming in support of a seasonal discovery of great gardens.

Nantclwyd y Dre is this year taking part in the National Garden Scheme which promotes garden sites open to the public for visiting on Sunday 30th June 11am – 4 pm. The gardens will be open jointly with Bron y Gaer, also in Castle Street, allowing access to the two properties for the price of one and showcasing the immaculate herbaceous borders and kitchen garden.

There will be the opportunity to partake in cream teas in the gardens with vintage cups and saucers. A plant stall, including plants grown exclusively on the site, will be available to purchase by visitors and a bargain Garden Pass can also be purchased for repeat visits to the site during opening times over the season.

Pride of place is given to the historic Summerhouse in the Lords Garden, once thought to be the kitchen garden of Ruthin Castle, as it features on the cover of the North East Wales National Garden Scheme brochure.

Hidden around the back of the house, the extensive gardens are described as ‘immaculate, with attractive flower beds, wildflower meadow and fruit and vegetable plots, provide a tranquil space right in the heart of Ruthin’.

The tranquil gardens are maintained by the Heritage Gardener and their team of dedicated volunteers. If anyone is interested in coming along to the Monday volunteer sessions please email [email protected] for more information.

The historic house offers a unique exploration of over 500 years of history, from medieval up to the 20th century and will be open for National Garden Scheme. Nantclwyd y Dre also offers visitors with the opportunity to observe live footage of the house’s special maternity roost of Lesser Horseshoe Bats via a live stream ‘Bat Cam’ from the attic space!

Emlyn Jones, Denbighshire County Council’s Head of Planning, Public Protection and Countryside Services, said: “We are really pleased that Nantclwyd’s historic garden is featured on the front cover of the North East Wales National Garden Scheme brochure as it is such a special place steeped in history and I would encourage everyone to stop by and experience it.”

The House and Gardens will be open during the season, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays from 10.30am to last entry at 4pm.
