Fourteen community sports clubs including football, basketball, disability athletics, cycling and rugby teams have benefitted from Cardiff Council grants to improve their facilities.

In total, £200,000 has been awarded through the scheme, which was delivered in partnership with Cardiff Met Sport. Projects funded include improvements to pitch and changing facilities, a new all-weather mountain bike track, a new minibus, and the installation of floodlights to enable winter training.

The scheme prioritised grant applications which would:

    • increase participation in disadvantaged areas.
    • promote safe and inclusive environments.
    • improve accessibility to facilities.
    • increase sport participation and promote active lifestyles; and
    • benefit the local community as a whole.

Cabinet Member for Culture, Parks and Events, said: “Local sports clubs play an important role in improving residents mental and physical health, but beyond that they’re also key to creating the safe, confident and empowered communities we want to see across the city.

“Our financial support will help create a stronger, fairer Cardiff by enabling clubs from all over the city to improve their facilities, get even more people involved in sport and continue to build on the fantastic work they’re already doing.”

One group to receive funding was Whitchurch Cycling Club. The Club currently has 111 youth group members aged 6 – 17. Working in collaboration with Coryton Primary School, the club aims to construct a natural-feel all-weather mountain bike pump trail and skills loop. Their grant funding will enable them to reach their fundraising target, built the track and move forward with plans to offer school and community sessions alongside club sessions.

Meanwhile, disability athletics club, Frame Running Dragons will use their funding to improve storage for the clubs disability running frames, allowing them to easily access suitable frames so that they can get out on the track and running much more easily and expand their outreach work.

Tribal Basketball also received grant funding. Their newly established National League teams away games are often played several hours away from Cardiff. The new minibus they plan to purchase with their grant funding will enable them to reduce the costs associated with travel to these matches, meaning young athletes from low-income families can enjoy the high quality sporting opportunities on offer in the National League.

    Other grant recipients include

    • St Albans Rugby Football Club
    • Caerau Ely Football Club
    • Canton Rugby Football Club
    • St. Peters Rugby Football Club
    • Earlswoood Rangers Football Club
    • Glamorgan Wanderers Rugby Football Club
    • South Wales Wildcats
    • Llanrumney Rugby Football Club
    • Splott Albion Football Club
    • AFC Rumney
    • Pentyrch Rugby Club
