The future is looking bright for one of Caerphilly County Borough’s most cherished heritage sites, Llancaiach Fawr Manor House in Nelson, following the announcement that a preferred operator has now been selected to take over the running of the popular venue.

The historic 16th-century manor house, a major tourist attraction and educational resource, closed its doors at the end of December 2024. The closure came as Caerphilly County Borough Council explored alternative delivery models in an effort to reduce the venue’s significant running costs, which included an annual subsidy of approximately £500,000.

As part of a formal procurement process, several interested parties came forward with expressions of interest to operate the site. Following a detailed evaluation, the council’s Cabinet has now approved a preferred bidder to manage Llancaiach Fawr, subject to the successful completion of lease negotiations.

A spokesperson for Caerphilly Council said:

‘We’re pleased to confirm that a preferred operator has now been identified. This marks a significant step forward in securing a sustainable and vibrant future for Llancaiach Fawr Manor. We are currently in the process of finalising lease agreements, after which we will be in a position to formally announce the successful bidder and share their exciting plans for the site.’

The council has reassured the local community that the manor’s cultural and historical significance will remain a priority under the new operator, and that updates will be provided in due course.

This latest development follows months of careful planning, community consultation, and a rigorous selection process aimed at preserving the legacy of Llancaiach Fawr while ensuring its long-term viability without the need for substantial public subsidy.

More details on the chosen operator and their vision for the manor are expected to be revealed soon.
