Caerphilly has announced plans to create a new state-of-the-art operations depot in the heart of the county borough after purchasing a key site on Dyffryn Business Park in Ystrad Mynach.

A new depot and processing facility will be developed at the site to help boost recycling rates and improve operational efficiency. This new facility will allow the council to sort dry kerbside recycling within the county borough, instead of sending it to Material Reclamation Facilities throughout the UK. The site will also replace the current depot in Tir-y-Berth.

Plans for the new facility are a key part of the council’s ambitious Waste and Recycling Strategy and the implementation of Welsh Government’s ‘blueprint’ collections from 2027/28, which was agreed in Cabinet on 23rd July 2025.

Welsh Government’s Collections Blueprint is the recommended service profile for the collection of household waste. The Blueprint provides a system that’s been proven to achieve good rates of high-quality recycling, significant cost savings and improved sustainable development outcomes.

Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member responsible for waste and recycling said: “We are pleased to announce plans to create our very own recycling depot here within the Caerphilly County Borough. This major scheme will transform the way we deliver our recycling service and, subject to planning approval, work will soon commence on creating the new facility at the site. We will, of course, keep residents and the local business community fully engaged and updated throughout this work.

“The introduction of this new site will futureproof Caerphilly’s recycling services, enabling us to roll out our Waste and Recycling Strategy and meet Welsh Government’s recycling targets.”
