Martin Burnell, 38, from Llanrumney, was arrested following an extensive investigation into a series of burglaries and attempt burglaries across Cardiff between March and May this year.

Burnell burgled homes while occupants were home and would commonly steal cash and high value items such as jewellery meaning the loss of sentimental and irreplaceable items for some families.

Once charged, he pleaded guilty to seven burglaries and two attempt burglaries of properties in Cyncoed, Roath, Old St Mellons, Rumney and Castleton, Newport.

During one burglary in Cyncoed, a 73-year-old woman was woken up and instructed to fill a bag with valuables including jewellery, worth in total around £23,,000.

In a statement to the court, the victim described the trauma Burnell’s action had caused.

She said: “Martin Burnell has changed my life forever. I wouldn’t wish the fear, the sleepless nights, the anxiety, or the loss of peace of mind on anyone else. I hope that justice is served, not just for me but to prevent others from having to go through the same experience.”

Burnell was identified through forensic examination and CCTV. When he was arrested at his home address on June 26, he was found hiding behind the sofa in the living room.

Burnell was sentenced to nine years in prison at Cardiff Crown Court on August 29.

Detective Sergeant George Buckley, from South Wales Police, said:“We welcome the lengthy sentence for Burnell following his prolific burglaries this year.

“He has caused much pain and suffering to those victims and families that he has targeted over the past year.

“We worked tirelessly to ensure the best possible outcome, and we hope the victims can feel some comfort now that justice has been served.”
