A 23-year-old from the Cardiff area has today, September 22, been sentenced following a proactive investigation led by Counter Terrorism Policing Wales.

Nermin Onour was initially arrested in October 2024 on suspicion of encouragement of terrorism contrary to Section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006. On arrest Onour was asked to provide her phone pin number and despite officers explaining that her refusal could lead to a criminal offence, she refused.

Shortly after, Onour was served with a Section 49 Advisory Notice which essentially advises an individual to provide access to a digital device or risk prosecution. Following the 23-year-olds continued refusal she was then handed a formal Section 49 notice.

Following her appearance at the Old Bailey today, Onour was given an 18-month custodial sentence.

Detective Chief Inspector Leanne Williams, Counter Terrorism Policing Wales said: “This is a prime example of how failure to comply with a Section 49 Notice can lead to a criminal conviction and imprisonment.

The investigation into Nermin Onour’s initial arrest will continue whilst she remains in custody.”
