City Hospice has hosted their first Sparkle Walk, a 10k night-time walk to raise money for the charity.

Over 250 members of the local Cardiff community came together to walk in memory of their loved ones and to support the work of City Hospice.

Participants donated £10 to take part in the walk and were provided with an event T-shirt on which they could write the name of their loved one. These T-shirts were worn by everyone taking part as well as many participants donning fairy lights and carrying glow sticks.

The 10k walk started at Insole Court in Llandaff at 9pm and took participants to City Hospice in Whitchurch before heading back to Insole Court to finish just after 1am. Participants were offered tea, coffee and cake at City Hospice, and were given the opportunity to leave a message for their loved one in the hospice’s Memory Garden. Medals and goody bags were then distributed to participants at Insole Court.

Daisy Magill, a Fundraising Officer from City Hospice said: “I am absolutely delighted by the success of the Sparkle Walk. It was very special to see crowds of people in their event t-shirts lighting up the streets of Cardiff.

“We have had so many lovely comments and messages about the event. The awareness it has raised of City Hospice is fantastic – we were so pleased to welcome members of the community to Ty Hosbis to show exactly where we are and to demonstrate what a warm and welcoming environment it is.

“We are already planning next year’s event and would like to give special thanks to all the local businesses and volunteers who helped make this event a huge success.”

The money raised at the Sparkle Walk will go towards helping City Hospice continue to provide specialist medical, nursing and end of life care to patients in their own homes as well as enabling the hospice to continue providing counselling to adults and children, welfare benefits advice and day centres that host a range of activities.

City Hospice is the only at-home palliative care provider in Cardiff. They provide care to those with incurable and life-limiting conditions, such as Cancer, Dementia, Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Their team work in the hospice based in Whitchurch as well as in the community, visiting patients in their homes. In order to continue providing these services City Hospice need to raise £2 million per year which is achieved through fundraising events and donations.
