Principality Building Society has signed up to the Work Welsh programme to support the development of Welsh language skills among its workforce.
Developed by the National Centre for Learning Welsh, the programme features a range of courses designed to increase the use of Welsh in the workplace and beyond. Principality colleagues are currently following an intensive course for beginners.
Principality has already shown its commitment to supporting the Welsh language, having established a Welsh language contact centre in Bangor and supporting the National Eisteddfod.
Mike Jones, Interim Chief Executive Officer at Principality Building Society, said:
“We’re delighted to be bringing the Work Welsh scheme to Principality colleagues and we’d like to thank Welsh Language Commissioner Aled Roberts for introducing us to the programme. As Wales’ largest building society, we recognise the importance and value that speaking Welsh has for both our Members and our colleagues. We want to see the Welsh language thrive and encourage those that speak Welsh alongside English to use it in their day-to-day dealing with us. Principality colleagues are thoroughly enjoying their course and look forward to continuing their professional development.”

“Research shows that customers value the opportunity to use Welsh with businesses, and that business leaders see the language as an advantage when trading in Wales. It has been great to work alongside Principality to think creatively and ambitiously on the basis of the research and to plan their services to meet the demand.
“Learning a language takes time; and I encourage all Welsh-speaking Principality customers to support their staff by giving them the opportunity to practice the language in branches.”

“The Centre’s Work Welsh programme has proved popular with both employers and employees, in workplaces across Wales. The Centre is able to tailor courses for particular sectors and employers and offer flexible learning options to suit learners.
