UWTSD helps Swansea get back to business

UWTSD’s Swansea College of Art has supplied 500 visors to Swansea BID for distribution amongst shops and organisations in the city centre.

The UWTSD team, led by Dr Ross Head, have been using the facilities at Swansea College of Art to produce the visors and have already supplied many care homes across the region. They have been working long hours laser cutting and assembling these vital face visors to help address any gaps in the supply of PPE.

Swansea BID has been busy supporting the businesses in the BID area through these challenging times, and these visors will be offered as part of their efforts to help them get ready to open again. They have produced an advice pack to provide information that contains risk assessments, hygiene requirements, legal advice and key guidance on PPE. The visors will be supplied alongside this information.

UWTSD has always had a close relationship with Swansea BID and in 2013 they co-launched the Creative Bubble initiative to encourage students to set up their own businesses in Swansea. The pop-up multi-purpose space in Cradock Street has hosted hundreds of student-led events from pop-up shops to networking evenings and has resulted in numerous student internships and employment with local businesses. Swansea BID will be temporarily using the Creative Bubble shop as a base to hand out the Reopening Advice Packs.

Russell Greenslade, Chief Executive of Swansea BID (Business Improvement District) said: “We’ve had a longstanding relationship with UWTSD via our Creative Bubble initiative, and we are very pleased to take delivery of these visors to help our city centre businesses get back on their feet – this is a lovely gesture.  This partnership initiative is part of  the work we have been doing with essential businesses that have remained open during lockdown, such as M&S, Sainsbury and Tesco to continue to evolve best practice.  The past few months have been a difficult time for all of our BID area businesses, but I am positive that if we all continue to pull together, we can move on to better times. We have much to look forward to.”

Professor Ian Walsh, Provost of UWTSD Swansea, said: “As part of our civic mission, UWTSD is committed to working with Swansea BID to build a strong and vibrant Swansea. In what is a very challenging time for the traders who form the backbone of the city’s commercial core, we see it as our duty to help them begin to move forward.”
