South Wales Police have been providing an increased police presence across communities in South Wales after the number of drink and drug drive arrests increased over the lockdown period.
Despite Covid-19 lockdown restrictions, analysis of drink and drug driving trends shows that there has been an increase in arrests this year compared to last year.
Between 23rd March – 31st July 2020, drink driving arrests increased by almost 9%, and drug driving arrests increased by almost 50% compared to arrests made during this time in 2019.
Officers are currently carrying out increased operational activity to deter and target those driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
Chief Inspector Helen Coulthard, Specialist Operations, said: “Drink or drug driving is a serious offence which can cost lives.
“We are targeting all drivers who choose to flout these road traffic laws, with additional focus during the Summer months when unfortunately the number of drivers involved in these cases does increase.
“Our roads policing teams continue to conduct their role and help keep communities safe, but we’re asking the public to keep themselves and others safe by not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”
As Covid-19 lockdown restrictions are eased, South Wales Police are encouraging the public to act responsibly and help to keep Wales safe.
