Abergavenny Town of Sanctuary (AToS) has won the prestigious Nation of Sanctuary Award at the Nation of Sanctuary Awards hosted by Wales Refugee Council at the Coal Exchange in Cardiff.
The award recognises AToS’s outstanding commitment to supporting sanctuary seekers and refugees in Wales, emphasising the unwavering dedication the group has shown since its establishment in 2016.
AToS tirelessly advocates for families, assisting them in navigating critical services such as healthcare and employment while facilitating their integration into the local community. The collective efforts of volunteers within AToS have played a pivotal role in supporting refugees and asylum seekers, earning them this esteemed award.
The English Language Cafe is among the key initiatives demonstrating AToS’s commitment to fostering inclusivity. This programme helps refugees develop their language skills and build meaningful relationships, reducing social isolation and encouraging community engagement.
Additional social initiatives, including the friendship quilt project, coach trips, iftars, and various sports activities, further strengthen the bonds within the community.
The organisation also focuses on employment support, helping individuals gain qualifications in construction, food service, and driving. AToS actively supports refugee-led businesses, providing mentorship and resources to help individuals overcome employment barriers.
As a registered food bank agency, AToS ensures families receive essential supplies that cater to their specific dietary needs. Their commitment to education and youth empowerment is reflected in the achievements of young refugees, who have secured GCSE and A-level success, gained university placements, and excelled in sports.
