Acquisition of Oxford business sees HSG diversify whilst breaking £20m turnover

Cardiff-headquartered HSG Group has acquired Oxford-based The School Lunch Company as it looks to build its portfolio of businesses between south Wales and London.

The School Lunch Company, which was established over nine years ago, will retain its branding and the 184 staff it currently employs whilst becoming part of the HSG Group.

The School Lunch Company provided fresh children’s meals using local suppliers, whilst delivering a bespoke and customised menu and service.

HSG, which primarily offers facilities management services, will see its group turnover exceed £20m in the current financial year.

HSG Managing Director, Ashley Govier, said: “This is an incredibly exciting deal for two primary reasons; it diversifies our portfolio whilst taking a big step towards our strategic goal of having a strong commercial network between south Wales and London.”

In 2021, HSG was named the fastest growing business in Wales between 2018 and 2020, achieving a growth rate of 800% whilst also being named the fastest growing business to business services firm.

Discussing how the deal came about, Mr Govier said: “The owners were retiring and looking for someone to continue their legacy and vision.

“It was clear that they had a good ethos and were passionate about the food they offered. The business is intent on providing freshly prepared, healthy, nutritious and tasty meals using locally sourced fresh produce.

“These values fitted with our own and are something that we all care about, with lots of our team having children at school.

“We are looking to expand the business with new offices and more staff so we can continue to serve the young people of Oxford and their families. The running of the day-to-day business will be tasked to the incumbent management team.”

The School Lunch Company provides fresh healthy balanced meals because they improve young people’s concentration and performance in school, promote health, growth and development, increase resistance to illness and introduces good habits for later life.
