    Getting your first job can be stressful. Whether you’re fresh out of university or college, completing an apprenticeship, or entering the world of work for the first time, knowing how to make a good impression on potential employers is key. Follow this guide to help make the application process as smooth as possible.

    Do Your Research

    Finding and tailoring English CV templates for your job application is important, but before applying for any role, make sure to thoroughly research both the company and position. Look on their website and social media pages to learn about their values, mission and work culture. This will help you tailor your application to show how you’d be a good organisational fit.

    It’s also important to understand exactly what the day-to-day responsibilities of the job entail. Carefully read through the job description and highlight all the key skills and attributes required. Think about how your own abilities can match these. The goal is to show the employer why you’re an ideal candidate.

    Crafting Your CV

    Your CV will likely serve as the very first impression you make on an employer. It needs to succinctly showcase your education, skills and experience. Look for CV templates that best fit your skills and experience. CVs for people applying for their first job tend to focus on personal qualities and education rather than job experience.

    Include your contact information at the top along with a professional profile summarising your qualifications for the role.

    When detailing your experience and education, focus on achievements and responsibilities that relate directly to the job you’re applying for. Quantify your accomplishments with facts and figures whenever possible. For example, rather than writing ‘Helped increase sales’, you can describe how you organised a team activity at school or college, or did an internship that helped you learn vital skills.

    Also, be sure your CV is tailored for each application. Tweak the profile, skills section and work history highlights based on what the employer is looking for. Pay close attention to the language used in the job description and aim to reflect their keywords in your CV.

    Writing a Standout Cover Letter

    A strong cover letter is your opportunity to expand on why you’re the right person for the job. Each one should be unique and specify exactly why you’re interested in this particular company and role.

    The first paragraph should explain why you’re writing and state the position you’re applying for. In the following paragraphs, highlight your most relevant qualifications, skills and experiences. Refer directly to details from the job description and explain how you fit what they’re looking for.

    Conclude by reiterating your interest and fit for the role. Thank them for their consideration and include your contact information. Be sure to directly address the letter to the hiring manager if their name is listed in the job advertisement.

    References

    Many job applications will request professional references from previous employers, teachers or others who can vouch for your character and work ethic. Reach out to potential references in advance to ask if they’re willing to provide a positive recommendation.

    Then prepare a reference sheet with their names, job titles, relationships to you and contact details. Bring this along to interviews as employers may request references at any stage of the hiring process. It’s smart to have 3-5 references readily available.

    Interview Prep

    Interviews are your chance to make a strong personal impression. Be sure to research the company’s products, services, culture and competitors so you can knowledgeably discuss your interest. Prepare answers to commonly asked questions like “Tell me about yourself” and “Why do you want this job?”.

    Also, get ready to talk about your skills, accomplishments and work style. Use the job description to anticipate what abilities and traits the employer seeks and have clear examples ready that show you possess them. Rehearse speaking about these out loud to polish your responses.

    Before the interview, ensure you know the exact time, location and the names/job titles of who you’re meeting. Plan your outfit, transport and timing to arrive 10-15 minutes early. This shows professionalism and enthusiasm for the role.

    First Impressions Count

    While applying for your first job involves many steps, the key is making a stellar first impression. Thoroughly research the role and company so you can tailor your application accordingly. Craft a compelling CV and cover letter, prepare strong references and interview answers and present yourself professionally. Follow these tips and you’ll demonstrate you have what it takes to succeed in your first job and launch your career.
