After eight years at the helm of the local authority, Councillor Huw David has confirmed that he intends to step down from his position as Leader of Bridgend County Borough Council. Councillor David will remain in the post until a new leader is elected as part of the annual meeting of Council, which will be held on Wednesday 15 May 2024. A popular circular walk at Hendre Lake Park is back in use after Cardiff Council completed the rebuilding of a bridge at the popular beauty spot. Work started on the 22-metre bridge, which sits on the outfall of the main river feeding the lake, last year and it was officially opened to the public this week. As part of a circular route around the lake, it is used by many people, including fishermen, dog walkers, bird watchers and nature lovers. Each year, the Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council chooses a charity to support throughout their time in office. Former Mayor, Councillor Elizabeth Aldworth, chose to raise funds for #TurnABUHBPink during her year as Mayor in 2022-23. The chosen charity is raising money to support the new Aneurin Bevan University Health Board NHS Breast Unit at Ystrad Fawr Hospital. The council has since to announced that during the Mayor’s year in office, a total of £5041.83 was raised to enhance the facilities at the Unit. A new grant to support tourism and hospitality businesses was launched in Blaenau Gwent on St David’s Day 2024. Blaenau Gwent, one of Wales’s smallest local authorities, sits at the Heads of the Valleys on the fringe of Banna Brechieniog (Brecon Beacons). This Mother’s Day, mother-of-two Bethan Dyke is advocating for more donors to come forward after receiving lifesaving blood transfusions due to complications following the birth of her twins. Bethan and partner Craig Keohane from Tonyrefail discovered they were expecting twins early in 2022. Late on in the pregnancy, after baby Ella’s growth rate slowed, a specialist from the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff made the decision to deliver the twins through a scheduled caesarean section. Encouraging children to read and improve their literacy skills is a priority for the Welsh Government and today, on World Book Day, the Minister for Education and Welsh Language celebrates a new Welsh language digital reading platform. By using Darllen Co, children can read Welsh books and listen to them at the same time.
