A man has been sentenced to six years imprisonment with an extended licence period of three years, following the death of Luke Higgins in Butetown, Cardiff David Smith, who admitted manslaughter, was jailed at Cardiff Crown Court last week (Friday, January 5). Police were called to a report of serious assault in Hansen Street at around 4.30am on Thursday, September 14, 2023. Craig Maxwell, a cancer fundraiser, is calling on the people of Cardiff to join him in walking the Wales Coast Path in a bid to raise £1 million for cancer research and treatment. With the aim of raising £1 million for the Maxwell Family Genomics Fund, a fund as part of Velindre Cancer Centre, Maxwell has kicked off 2024 with a new challenge to take on the Wales Coast Path. Children in some of the poorest parts of Africa are being clothed thanks to the sewing skills of a team of volunteer women from Denbighshire. The Dress A Girl Around the World project is based at the North Wales Women’s Centre in Rhyl where their group of enthusiastic seamstresses has just been boosted by a £700 grant which is buying them six new sewing machines. The Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Cllr Steve Hunt and the council’s Welsh Labour Group Leader, Cllr Rob Jones, have paid tribute to Cllr Sheila Penry who died over the Christmas Holiday period. The major Berw Road Bridge (White Bridge) repair scheme in Pontypridd will now enter its next phase. All required concrete repairs to the underside of the Listed bridge have recently been completed, along with the final painting of the structure. From Monday, January 8, the bridge will need to be closed to pedestrians (for the remainder of the scheme), so the scaffolding can be removed and the next stage of work can start.
