A Mid Wales based chef has achieved a career dream by winning the National Chef of Wales competition at the fifth attempt. Matthew Smith, 39, who lives in New Mills, near Newtown, won a final cook-off against eight rival chefs to win the prestigious title at the Welsh International Culinary Championships (WICC), organised by the Culinary Association of Wales (CAW) at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s campus in Rhos-on-Sea. A series of free training sessions will be held across Wales this month to help increase public and trade awareness and skills in preparing Welsh Seafood. Aimed at the seafood-loving consumers and those who work in the hospitality and seafood sectors, the ‘Catch it, Prep it, Cook it, Eat it’ sessions have been organised by the Wales Seafood Cluster and funded through the Welsh Government Coastal Capacity Challenge Fund. RSPCA Cymru is appealing for information after a stray corn snake was found on the pavement near Swansea train station. The unusual discovery happened on Friday morning (24 February) after the snake was found by a passer-by when walking to work. The activities of BT Group added £740 million to the wider economy of Wales last year and supported nearly 8,500 jobs, according to a new report published this week. The report from consultancy firm Hatch looked at the spend of employees and suppliers of BT Group – which includes EE, BT, Plusnet and Openreach – and the estimated knock-on impact that has on economies across the country.
