 Cardiff Council has revealed it is facing a predicted budget shortfall in 2026/27 of £38.4 million. The council is now working on a budget plan for next year – which could see some services reduced or stopped completely – to bridge the gap. The shortfall arises when the money the council receives from Government, combined with council tax income, isn’t enough to pay for the 700-plus services the council delivers to residents. Swansea city centre has taken a major step towards reducing single-use packaging with the launch of the 2GoCup scheme. The 2GoCup initiative equips participating businesses with reusable cups, making it easier for customers to swap out single-use cups for a more sustainable choice. A joint initiative by Swansea Council and Swansea Business Improvement District (BID), 2GoCup will see customers pay a small deposit for a durable, reusable cup, which they can return to any participating business for a refund or for swapping with a fresh cup. Residents in Powys are being encouraged to help bring long term empty properties back into use to help tackle the housing emergency in the county. Powys County Council is calling on residents to use its Empty Property Referral Form to report any empty homes they are aware of, especially those causing damage or damp to neighbouring properties. A further eight Aberystwyth University academics have been announced as members of prestigious sub-panels assessing research excellence in the UK higher education sector, bringing the total involved to nine.
