Councillors and special guests recently attended the official opening by the Mayor, Cllr John Spanswick, of a new community garden, created on the site of the old Berwyn Centre Miners Hall in Nantymoel. The Hall was demolished in 2013 after falling into a state of disrepair and closing due to safety issues. In its place, a new community garden space has been created, overlooked by a striking sculpture of a miner and coal dram, reflecting the rich mining history of the area. Tenants recently moved into the first new council homes to be built in the Caerphilly county borough in 19 years. From today [March 21st] physically punishing children will be illegal in Wales as Welsh Government continues to put children’s rights at the heart of its policies. Wales joins more than 60 nations across the world to end the physical punishment of children. This landmark legislation removes the archaic 160-year-old legal defence and provides children the same protection from assault as adults. Under the Children (Abolition of Defence of Reasonable Punishment) (Wales) Act 2020 all types of physical punishment, such as smacking, hitting, slapping and shaking, are illegal.
