Swansea University Medical School has appointed two key members of staff as it prepares to launch its new pharmacy course. Mair Davies, immediate past-Director for Wales for the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, and Dr Neil Hartman, head of nuclear medicine at Singleton Hospital, have both been given Honorary Professor appointments ahead of the new MPharm degree beginning in 2021. While Erddig is closed, National Trust staff are working hard to look after the house, collections and gardens, including Head Gardener Glyn Smith who has taking mowing to another level. Campaigners say the ban on menthol cigarettes could help tackle youth smoking rates in Wales, where according to new figures over 6,000 children take up the habit every year. The new law, which comes into force today, will see the sale of menthol flavoured cigarettes and tobacco products banned under the EU Tobacco Products Directive. Volunteers with the Macmillan Carmarthenshire Buddy Service are adapting their hands-on approach during the coronavirus pandemic and taking to their telephones to offer vital support to people living with cancer. The award-winning volunteer service, which is run by Macmillan Cancer Support, began in 2014 and matches community volunteers with people with cancer. The service normally offers face-to-face emotional and practical support and can involve anything from a cuppa and a chat, to helping with day-to-day tasks such as light housework, gardening or getting people to appointments. Organisers of the popular Builth Wells- based Rallynuts Stages Rally have taken the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 event. Previously postponed from its April 18 date due to the developing Covid-19 situation, the rally, which attracted an almost capacity entry in 2019 and is a round of the MRF Tyres BTRDA Rally Series and Pirelli Motorsport UK Welsh Rally Championship, had attempted to run on August 8.
