City leaders have visited Swansea’s historic Castle Cinema building to learn about its planned transformation. Plans for the building include 30 new apartments and new commercial units, thanks to a project led by local non-profit Beacon Cymru in partnership with contractors Easyliving Ltd. In the building’s main elevation facing Worcester Place and the castle, a new commercial unit over two storeys will be created for a café/restaurant type use. A stone quarry in the Swansea Black Mountains has significantly expanded its operations thanks to a £1.45 million joint funding from HSBC UK and the Development Bank of Wales. Gwrhyd Quarry – which has been operational for over a decade – produces Gwrhyd Pennant sandstone used in significant Welsh landmarks, including the Swansea Arena, Senedd building in Cardiff Bay, and many more developments across South Wales. An internationally acclaimed harpist is coming out of self-imposed retirement to give a series of performances featuring two historical harps. A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of mum-of-two Victoria Thomas in Cardiff. Alcwyn Thomas had spent the day drinking heavily and taking cocaine before strangling 45-year-old Victoria to death at the house they shared on Caerphilly Road in Birchgrove. Thomas, 44, admitted manslaughter but maintained that Victoria’s death was a ‘sex act gone wrong’ and that it was during ‘erotic asphyxiation’ that she died. He denied murder but was found guilty following a trial at Cardiff Crown Court. He has now been sentenced to life in prison and must serve a minimum term of…
