South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has declared a major incident in Monmouth following severe and widespread flooding across the town and surrounding communities. At 01:30 hours on Saturday 15th November, a major incident was declared by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service due to the flooding as a result of Storm Claudia. Crews are working throughout the area alongside Gwent Police, Welsh Ambulance Services NHS University Trust (WAST), SARA, Mountain Rescue, the Coastguard, and colleagues from neighbouring fire and rescue services who have provided additional support. South Wales Police are currently dealing with a road traffic collision on the A470, which has led to the southbound carriageway being closed from the Caerphilly exit slip road. The closure is expected to remain in place for some time and drivers are being asked to avoid the area and find another route if possible. Police have thanked motorists for their patience while the incident is ongoing. Some drivers say they have been able to leave the A470 at the Caerphilly junction, travel across the roundabout and rejoin the road further along, although delays remain likely.

Traffic is already slowing across parts of south Wales this evening, with several busy routes reporting congestion as rush hour gets underway. Cardiff is set for another busy weekend as Wales take on Japan at Principality Stadium this Saturday. With large crowds expected, the city centre will see extensive road closures and extra travel measures, so anyone heading in is being urged to plan ahead and give themselves plenty of time. Rush hour drivers are facing major delays on the M4 this evening after flooding forced the closure of a lane near Newport. The issue is affecting the eastbound stretch between junction 26 at Malpas and junction 25 at Caerleon, where lane 2 has been shut. Traffic is very slow through the area and delays are currently around 45 minutes. Motorists are being urged to allow extra time for their journeys while the flooding is dealt with. Drivers heading west on the M4 motorway between Junction 28 (Tredegar Park) and Junction 29 (Castleton) are facing heavy congestion after incident lane restrictions this morning. According to Traffic Wales, lane 1 remains blocked while lanes 2 and 3 are now open. Travel times in the affected stretch are estimated at around 40 minutes of delay.
