Cllr Lis Burnett, Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, was joined by Jayne Bryant MS, the Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government to see key council housing developments.
They visited several housing sites in Barry – one of the areas with the greatest demand for accommodation – including three schemes at Coldbrook Road East, Clos Holm View and on the former Colcot Clinic site, as well as the newly completed homes at Hayeswood Road.
The Hayeswood Road development consists of one, two, three and four-bedroom properties built on land acquired by the Vale of Glamorgan Council from Welsh Government.
These recent housing developments are a key part of the Council’s long-term plans to increase the number of council houses.
Cllr Lis Burnett, Leader of the Council, said: “I was delighted to be joined by the Cabinet Secretary on this visit to see our ambitious council housing developments.
“Ensuring that every Vale resident has access to a long-term home is a priority for the Council during this period of unprecedented demand for housing.
“The Cabinet Secretary and I discussed the importance of such housing schemes and how these new sites are helping some of the most vulnerable members of the community.
“The Council is committed to tackling the housing crisis by building quality homes for today’s Vale residents and for future generations.”
The Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government, Jayne Bryant, said: “We know that there is a real need for good quality homes in this area and it was wonderful to see some of the innovative projects the Vale of Glamorgan Council has been delivering to address housing challenges in Barry.
“We provided more than £17m in 2023/24 through our Social Housing Grant to support housing developments across the county and have allocated a further £10m this financial year to help deliver even more affordable and modern homes.”
The Coldbrook Road East development – which sits on a former quarry site – will be made up of one and two-bed homes with work due to be completed in April.
The tour also included walk-throughs of the 12 new apartments at the former Colcot Clinic site, and homes on the second phase of Clos Holm View.
Phase one of the Clos Holm View development involved building 11 housing units, with a further 31 being created on phase two.
Clos Holm View consists of a mixture of houses, apartments and bungalows including some adapted homes to meet the needs of those with a disabled family member.
These projects are the latest examples of the Council’s work to address the increasing demand for housing in the Vale of Glamorgan and across the country.
