After more than five decades since its original launch, Ford has brought back a true motoring icon – the Capri. But this isn’t a retro revival in the traditional sense. The 2025 Ford Capri has been completely reimagined as a sleek, all-electric SUV coupé that nods to its heritage while embracing a very modern future.

Originally built at Ford’s Halewood plant in Liverpool, the classic Capri was a staple of British roads between 1969 and 1986. Designed by the same man who styled the original Ford Mustang, it became a symbol of accessible performance and style. Fast-forward to 2025, and the name returns – but now it’s underpinned by Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, shared with models like the VW ID.5.

The new Capri stands out with some clever styling cues that honour its roots. Most notably, the swooping C-pillar and sleek rear light cluster are clear nods to the original fastback design. But upfront, it blends in more with the current crop of electric SUVs.

Performance is strong, especially in the dual-motor AWD model tested, with a 0–62mph time of just 5.3 seconds and an estimated real-world range of around 330 miles from the 77kWh battery. Drivers can switch between eco, normal, sport and individual drive modes – each with unique interior lighting and noticeably different behaviour.

Inside, there’s a mix of smart tech and everyday practicality. A massive 14-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard, paired with a small digital driver’s display and a useful head-up display. There’s loads of room for passengers, a generous boot, and well-thought-out controls – though some may find the ride a little firm on larger wheels, and the infotainment screen is prone to fingerprints.

The new Capri is available in Style, Select and Premium trims, with prices starting at just over £42,000 and rising to over £60,000 when fully loaded. Our test car came in the range-topping Premium spec, complete with 21-inch alloys, a driver assistance pack, heat pump and “Blue My Mind” paint – a striking package with the price tag to match.

So, does the all-electric Capri live up to the legacy of its legendary badge? That depends on how attached you are to the original – but there’s no denying it’s an impressive new entry in Ford’s EV line-up and a serious alternative to more established electric SUVs.
