Cardiff households to receive one-off green garden waste collection

Households across Cardiff will receive a one-off green garden waste collection in May, Cardiff Council has announced.

The additional collections have been arranged to help residents dispose of some of their grass cuttings and garden waste, which has built up since the service was halted because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Residents must, however, only put out garden waste for collection in their green wheelie bin or their reusable garden sacks.

Any additional garden waste, which is put in any other container, including plastic bags, will not be collected.

We have been working to update the calendar information for residents across the website, Cardiff Gov App and BOBi (our Chatbot). Please be aware that the calendars only show the next three collections for your property so if you are scheduled for a Garden waste collection later in the month it won’t show immediately.

Cabinet Member for Clean Streets, Environment and Recycling, Cllr Michael Michael said: “A lot of residents have been getting in touch wondering if there was any chance we could do a garden waste collection during the outbreak. We’ve worked on a plan which involves our waste teams coming in specially to work every Saturday in May to pick up garden waste. With the reduced staffing we have been experiencing due to the virus I want to stress that this hasn’t been easy to arrange.

“So, it’s important people recognise this is a one-off and everyone does their bit and only puts out garden waste in their green bins or their garden sacks. Any more garden waste will have to be left behind. We simply won’t have the time or capability to pick up more without disrupting our normal weekly collections across the city.”

  • If your collection day is usually on a Monday, your garden waste will be collected on Saturday, May 2nd.
  • If your collection day is usually on a Tuesday, your green garden waste will be collected Saturday May 9th.
  • If your collection day is usually on a Wednesday, your green garden waste will be collected Saturday May 16th.
