Penallta Reuse Shop are celebrating another year of success, after opening three years ago.

Penallta Reuse Shop, which is operated by South Wales based charity, Wastesavers Charitable Trust Ltd. opened in October 2022 and provided an opportunity for items once destined for the skips at Household Recycling Centres to be reused and sold at bargain prices.

Since opening, the Shop has successfully diverted 260,375 items from the waste stream and gotten them into the hands of those who need them – that’s equates to over 400 tonnes!

Whilst offering pre-loved items at great prices, Penallta Reuse Shop is also a social enterprise, supporting a range of initiatives including social inclusion and helping organisations that work with families in crisis, and have also joined forces with local charities and partnerships to offer a reuseable nappy library, Keep Wales Tidy litter picking hub and Caerphilly Uniform Exchange hub within the shop.

Councillor Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Waste, Leisure & Green spaces said: “Since opening Penallta Reuse Shop with Wastesavers, we’ve seen first-hand how reuse can positively impact both the environment and the community.
“The shop has become a brilliant example of how circular economy initiatives can deliver real social and economic value, and we’re excited to support its continued growth in the years ahead.
“A huge thank you to everyone who’s contributed to this project — from residents generously donating their pre-loved items, to the shoppers, our hardworking waste team, and the incredible volunteers. Each of you has played a vital role in reaching this fantastic milestone, and it’s something we can all be proud of.”

Wastesavers Charity Manager, Alun Harries added: “Penallta Reuse Shop had the full support and investment form the local authority it needed from day one, and this collaboration has proven to be a circular economy success for the all stakeholders. It is great to see the residents of Caerphilly fully support and engage with all elements of the shop and bring multiple benefits to the community.”

Penallta Reuse Shop is located at Penallta Industrial Estate, South Road, Hengoed, CF82 7ST and is open seven days a week, 9:00-4:00.
