Synergy Plastics, a long-established manufacturer of plastic injection moulds based at 8 Willow Road, Pen Y Fan Industrial Estate, Crumlin, has been awarded £18,704.50 through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) Business Development Grant 2024/25. The funding will support the company’s ongoing expansion and sustainability efforts.

Founded in 1994, Synergy Plastics employs 49 staff and is currently expanding its site to increase storage capacity, enabling more efficient manufacturing operations. The grant has been instrumental in funding two key projects:

    • Installation of a new ‘free cooling’ system to complement existing chillers, significantly reducing energy consumption and operating costs while lowering the company’s carbon footprint.
    • Procurement of robust, recyclable storage boxes to streamline internal logistics and reduce CO₂ emissions. These boxes are made from 66% recycled materials and are fully recyclable at end of life.

Bernadette Lessimore, speaking on behalf of Synergy Plastics, said:

“We recently worked with Caerphilly Borough Council to obtain funding for new storage boxes and a Free Cooling Unit. The process was thorough but straightforward, and Sally Harvey, our Investment Officer, was always on hand to support us.

Both projects have added real value to our operations. The free cooling unit uses ambient air to cool return water, reducing our reliance on mechanical refrigeration. The new storage boxes have improved our logistics and space efficiency while supporting our sustainability goals.

All in all, a very welcomed grant from Caerphilly Borough Council, especially when it’s a well-supported process.”

Adam Sadler, Principal Business Development Officer at Caerphilly County Borough Council, added:

“Synergy Plastics are a successful legacy business within the borough. The business team are glad we were able to help future-proof the building as well as support their freight service.”
