South Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called to a large industrial fire at Aberthaw Power Station, Barry, at approximately 09:32 today.
Crews from stations including Ely, Llantwit Major, Kenfig Hill, Barry, Penarth, Whitchurch, Cardiff Central, Pontypridd, Maindee, Caerphilly, Merthyr Tydfill, New Inn, Cwmbran, Tonypandy and Bridgend remain at the scene, supported by eight fire appliances, four water bowsers, two aerial hydraulic platforms, and a range of specialist equipment.
Group Manager, Tony Redman commented:”Crews continue to tackle the fire at Aberthaw Power Station, Barry. We are advising residents to keep their windows and doors closed. Although the current wind direction is carrying the majority of smoke out to sea, smoke may affect those in areas including Rhoose and Font-Y-Gary.”
The incident comes just weeks after a major milestone in the site’s redevelopment, when the former power station’s iconic 650 foot (198 metre) chimney stack was safely demolished.
The chimney had been one of the tallest structures in Wales, dominating the South Wales skyline for more than 50 years before its demolition as part of the site’s transformation.
The 500 acre former power station site, which supplied much of the UK’s electricity for decades, was purchased by the Cardiff Capital Region City Deal partnership in 2022 through a £36.4 million investment. It is being redeveloped into a green energy and innovation hub focused on supporting future low carbon industries.
