Gatland’s Backroom Team
Gatland’s backroom team is a mixture of seasoned coaches and new faces. The Wales head coach has recruited three new assistant coaches to his squad this summer: Stephen Jones (attack coach), Jonathan Humphreys (forwards coach) and Gethin Jenkins (defence coach). In addition to these appointments, Gatland also has Neil Jenkins on board as a skills coach.
Attack Coach: Stephen Jones
Stephen Jones is one of the most influential figures in the history of Welsh rugby. A World Cup winner and a national hero at scrum half. He became one of the most significant attack coaches in rugby history.
Jones adopted an expansive rugby style for Llanelli RFC, which he coached in the 1980s. This style was then adopted by Warren Gatland when he coached Wales. Stephen Jones helped coach the Scarlets to a thrilling PRO12 title in 2015.

There’s no doubt that Gatland knows his stuff when it comes to coaching. There’s some hope that his changes will result in a better performance by Wales at the RWC. We’ve yet to see any alteration of pride or belief in the Welsh camp. Regardless of the result in 2023, they will need to seriously assess their mentality and squad building if they are to challenge the top teams.
