Gower Unearthed CIC has announced the launch of an exciting new project, funded by the UK Government, to preserve and celebrate Gower’s rich farming history. This initiative captures stories, photographs, and historical insights from the farming communities of Mumbles, Bishopston, Murton, and Manselfield—communities that have been instrumental in shaping Gower’s heritage.

The project includes the reprint of two important local history documents: Gower Farm Trail, by Roscoe Howells, and The Farms and Families of Manselfield, by Carolyn Llewellyn. These limited-edition reprints, available through Gower Unearthed, give new generations the chance to reconnect with the area’s agricultural roots and understand the resilience and dedication of its farming families.

In addition to the reprints, Gower Unearthed has created a new booklet, available in local outlets, that connects modern technology with local history. This booklet includes QR codes linking directly to recorded interviews and archival materials hosted on the Story of Mumbles digital archive. Through these recordings, visitors can hear firsthand accounts from local farming families, offering a glimpse into farming traditions, evolving practices, and the challenges and triumphs of rural life over the years.

To celebrate the project, Gower Unearthed is hosting a launch event at the Lamplighter Café in Bishopston. The event will give the community a chance to view the reprinted books before they are deposited in local libraries, engage with the stories behind them, and learn more about the efforts to preserve these important memories for future generations.

Helen Nicholas, Director of Gower Unearthed, said:

“This project has been a remarkable journey through the past and present of Gower’s farming community. We’re thrilled to bring these voices and memories to life and ensure they remain accessible for years to come. It’s a privilege to share the rich heritage of Gower’s farming families with the community and celebrate the farmers who have shaped our landscape and culture.”

Gower Unearthed is dedicated to exploring and sharing the rich history and heritage of Gower through community-focused projects, events, and educational resources. From oral histories and archival research to guided tours and workshops, the organisation is committed to connecting people with Gower’s unique landscapes, folklore, and cultural traditions. With each project, Gower Unearthed seeks to deepen appreciation and understanding of Gower’s past, while inspiring future generations to safeguard and celebrate it.

This latest project hopes to engage residents and visitors alike, fostering a lasting appreciation for Gower’s agricultural legacy. By making these materials accessible both in print and online, Gower Unearthed aims to ensure Gower’s farming history is preserved for future generations.
