Heavy traffic on M4 in Newport as storms sweep across Wales

Traffic Wales has issued warnings this afternoon for two stretches of the M4, where motorists may face delays due to the current weather conditions. Strong winds and persistent rain across Wales are compounding the situation.

    What’s happening

    • M4 Westbound: Junction 24 (Coldra) to Junction 26 (Malpas)

    • M4 Eastbound: Junction 28 (Tredegar Park) to Junction 26 (Malpas)

These are classed as moderate disruptions. Traffic Wales reports incidents along these stretches that are leading to congestion.

    Why it’s worse today

The Met Office has issued a Yellow Weather Warning covering much of Wales. Drivers are dealing with:

    • Gales of up to 70 mph, especially along exposed coasts and higher ground

    • Heavy rain and prolonged downpours spreading northeastward across the country

    • Spray on roads, reduced visibility, and slippery surfaces make driving more challenging

These conditions are likely making travel on the M4 more difficult. The combination of strong winds, rain and road congestion is heightening risk.

    What to do

    • If you’re travelling through these parts of the M4, allow extra time.

    • Consider alternative routes if possible, especially if your journey passes between J28 and J26 → eastbound, or between J24 and J26 → westbound.

    • Reduce speed and watch for spray or sudden gusts.

    • Check live traffic updates and weather forecasts before setting off.
