Cardiff residents looking to dispose of household waste at local recycling centres are being reminded that booking a time slot in advance is essential before visiting.

Cardiff Council has outlined the process for using its recycling centres, as well as key rules on what can and cannot be taken to the sites.

Two recycling centres are available for residents, located at Lamby Way and Bessemer Close. Both sites are free to use, but they are strictly for household waste only, with businesses directed to use a separate commercial recycling facility.

To access either centre, residents must book a slot online in advance and bring proof of both their booking and their address on arrival. The council says this system helps manage demand and ensures smooth operation across both locations.

Residents are encouraged to only visit the centres for items that cannot be disposed of through regular kerbside collections. For most households, making full use of food waste caddies, recycling bags and hygiene collections can significantly reduce the need to visit.

There are also limits on how often people can attend. Households can book up to 26 visits per year, with a maximum of three visits per day when travelling by car. However, those using a van or a car with a trailer are restricted to one visit per month.

The council has also stressed that recycling centres are not designed for large scale DIY waste. Only small home improvement projects are catered for, with residents advised to hire a skip or use a commercial site for larger jobs. Any waste brought to the site must fit داخل the boot of a car, and staff are unable to assist with unloading.

A wide range of items can be recycled at the centres, including electrical goods, furniture, garden waste, batteries, textiles, glass, wood and scrap metal. Some items are site specific, such as tyres and UPVC windows, which are only accepted at Lamby Way.

There are also strict rules around general waste. Mixed bags of non sorted rubbish are not accepted and should instead be disposed of through normal black bin collections. Where non recyclable waste is brought to site, staff must check items before they are placed into designated skips.

Certain materials, such as asbestos, require special arrangements. Residents wishing to dispose of asbestos must book an appointment by phone, as this service cannot be booked online, and is limited to small quantities at Bessemer Close.

Cardiff Council is urging residents to check the full list of accepted materials and terms before travelling, to avoid being turned away.

Slots can be booked online via the council’s website here.
