Hundreds of pot holes fixed, as council aims to repair them within 48 hours

Hundreds of potholes caused by bad weather have been repaired by highways maintenance teams in Swansea

Swansea Council is keeping to its promise of repairing potholes reported online within 48hrs and is urging the public to report any potholes to they encounter so they can be dealt with as quickly as possible

The council stated that severe weather during November and December has provided the perfect conditions for potholes with heavy rain and frost breaking up road surfaces overnight in some cases

Latest statistics show that in December almost 500 potholes were repaired with the majority completed within 48hrs. The week following Boxing Day was particularly busy with 196 repairs completed.

Andrew Stevens, Cabinet Member for Environment & Infrastructure, said: “Our highways maintenance teams have been doing a fantastic job responding to a high volume of pothole reports which have come in from the public.

“At this time of year, when the weather is much colder and wetter, we expect to receive more reports and carry out more repairs.

“The last week in December, was very busy and we repaired almost 200 potholes

“We made a pledge to repair potholes within 48hrs of them being reported to our call centre and in general we have kept to that pledge with around 98% of them being repaired within that time frame.”

In the run up to Christmas Day, the Council’s winter maintenance teams were also busy battling freezing temperatures, gritting roads. During Christmas week, the gritting teams travelled a total of 4,000km, ensuring main roads were treated with grit.

Cllr Stevens added; “Many of the staff that repair roads are also responsible for gritting roads as well. This puts a lot of pressure on the teams to do what’s required and ensure our roads are safe for motorists.

“In the main, they have done an excellent job in keeping roads in good shape. I hope the public will also see the good work they are doing and support their efforts.”
