A young woman from Merthyr, who was unsure about her future career pathway, has now secured a place on the course of her dreams after embarking on the Jobs Growth Wales+ programme with Whitehead-Ross Education.

Seventeen-year-old, Scarlett, felt despondent about her future after realising that the Public Services course she was studying at Coleg Gwent was not for her. She had secured a place on the course through a rugby scholarship and had her heart set on becoming a police officer. However, when she realised the course was not what she thought it would be, she started to question her future in the police force.

Before deciding to change the direction of her life, she investigated alternative options and settled on the idea of a career in nursing instead. Whilst looking at her available options with her mum’s encouragement Scarlett decided to sign up for the Jobs Growth Wales Plus programme with Whitehead-Ross Education. The programme has provided Scarlett with important life skills such as interview techniques, money management, healthy living and staying safe online along with recently supporting her in her application to college.

Scarlett said “The programme has been great. Not only have I met and made new friends for life, but I have also learned some useful skills. Many of which I wouldn’t have even considered before, but now I feel like I have more confidence, knowledge and life experience for when it comes to entering the world of work and starting my college course in September.”

Georgina Payne, Youth Tutor at Whitehead Ross Education said, “Jobs Growth Wales+ is about more than offering young people the chance to gain qualifications and work experience, it is about providing support, advice and guidance, as well as equipping them with the tools to develop work and life skills and build confidence.”

Jobs Growth Wales+ is a training and development programme for 16-19-year-olds not in full-time education, employment or training (NEET). The programme provides a range of qualifications, work experience and support, to help individuals progress into further learning, Apprenticeships or to secure future employment.

Whitehead-Ross Education delivers the Jobs Growth Wales Programme through its Merthyr branch, supporting young people from 16-19 years old to progress into further learning, an apprenticeship or employment.

Whitehead Ross Education is an adult education and social service provision that operates six training centres in South Wales and supports more than 3,500 people every year. Its work includes support for unemployed individuals to secure and retain jobs through employability programmes like Jobs Growth Wales Plus, adult education and social service provision.
