Merthyr Tydfil Town Centre is set to become safer for pedestrians, with the installation of gates and bollards to stop vehicles from driving on the High Street.

Areas of town centre are already subject to vehicular restrictions, however ongoing issues with vehicles still accessing the High Street means that physical measures are needed to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

The changes being made, are as follows:

    • A gate will be installed across the High Street at its junction with Swan Street.
    • Four bollards will be positioned on the High Street just south of is junction with Market Square, with two planters and a seating cube also being installed in this area.
    • Two planters will be installed along Market square, just South of Santander Bank.

Councillor Anna Williams-Price, Cabinet Member for Governance and Resources, said: “Our priority is to make the High Street a safe space for all pedestrians.

“Historic issues with non-emergency vehicles accessing the area, which is a designated pedestrian zone, means that we’ve had to take action and create a physical barrier to stop vehicular access.

“The feedback we’ve had for this proposal has been very positive, with business owners saying that they see it as a positive move for both their business and the Town Centre as a whole.”

The changes will come into effect week commencing Monday 3rd March.
