Nathaniel Cars sells 20,000th MG as partnership marks ten year milestone

Exactly a decade after teaming up with MG Motor, Welsh car retailer Nathaniel Cars has sold its 20,000th new MG to establish the family business as the brand’s leading UK dealership.

The landmark sale comes just ten years after the family-run business, founded in Bridgend in 1980, took on the MG franchise.

Today, Nathaniel Cars has grown from a 43-strong workforce selling 1,000 new and used cars a year to a team of 200 people across four sites – Bridgend, Cardiff, Cwmbran and Swansea – with annual sales exceeding 8,000 cars.

The relationship with MG began at a time of great personal challenge for company director, Nathan Griffiths, as he returned to the business following a battle with stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

“The month I came back, that was when we took on MG,” he recalls. “It gave me something to fight for, it gave me a purpose. MG didn’t just change our business, but it changed my life as well.

“What we’ve achieved in the time since is more than a growth in numbers. It’s been a journey that illustrates mutual trust with our customers, a sense of shared values, and the importance of a strong, Welsh heart to our business.”

Nathaniel’s have also teamed up with MG for two epic driving challenges. In 2022, “Car to Qatar” saw four Welsh fans drive from Cardiff to the World Cup, while in 2024, adventurer twins Hugo and Ross Turner marked MG’s centenary with a 10,000-mile London-to-Shanghai journey in a pre-production MG Cyberster.

Wayne Griffiths, who founded the business 45 years ago and continues to work alongside his son Nathan, says the company’s success is built on consistency and values.

Wayne said: “Family, loyalty, and looking after people, those are the values that guided us then, and they continue guide us now. MG shares those values, and that’s why our partnership endures.”

Nathaniel’s success mirrors the MG brand’s own resurgence. The brand is now the number one best-selling car in Wales, and 12thoverall across the UK.

The Griffiths family believe their team’s success proves that it isn’t the size of the business that matters, but belief, alignment, and effort are the cornerstones of success. It’s a view shared by William Wang, Managing Director of MG Motor UK, who added:

“Over the past decade, Nathaniel MG has become more than just a top dealer; they have become a partner we trust and are deeply embedded in the MG story. Their commitment to Welsh communities, customer care, and growth has helped MG flourish in a competitive market.

“This 20,000-vehicle milestone is a testament, not just to their ambition, but to the shared values that make this partnership special.”

As Nathaniels Cars move into their second decade with the MG brand, Wayne and Nathan will continue to work side by side.

Nathan continued: “For us the future means looking beyond borders to compete at a European level. We’re driven by a strong sense of community, the courage to overcome any obstacle and the belief that we are, “Together Stronger.”
