Traffic lights have been introduced on the Menai Bridge as Welsh Government steps up efforts to prevent overweight vehicles from crossing during one of the busiest periods of the year.
The changes came into effect on Wednesday evening (27 May) and will remain in place for the duration of the Urdd Eisteddfod.
The move follows recent breaches of the bridge’s 7.5 tonne weight restriction, with only vehicles under that limit now permitted to use the crossing.
Operatives will be stationed on the bridge to turn away vehicles exceeding the weight limit, while police and Welsh Government Traffic Officers will also increase their presence in the area to support compliance.
A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “We understand the frustration caused by the closures of the Menai bridge during this busy time and are doing everything we can to minimise disruption.
“Only vehicles under 7.5 tonnes may use the Menai Bridge. Following recent breaches, traffic lights will now be in operation on the bridge from this evening (27th May) and for the duration of Urdd Eisteddfod. Operatives will turn away vehicles which are over the weight limit. Those who fail to comply will be referred to the police, and we will increase police and Welsh Government Traffic Officer presence to support compliance.
“We would urge members of the public to respect those working on the Bridge and to follow their instructions.
“Improving resilience across the Menai Strait remains a key priority for Welsh Government as part of our wider transport and economic ambitions.”
The Menai Bridge has faced repeated restrictions and closures in recent years following safety concerns, leading to disruption for residents, businesses and visitors travelling between Anglesey and the mainland.
Motorists travelling through the area during the Urdd Eisteddfod are being advised to allow extra time for their journeys and follow official traffic updates.
