New wall art for colourful Cardiff street

A vibrant new mural is the latest addition to the artwork and colourful streetscape of a recently regenerated city centre road.

A delicate pink waterlily is the centrepiece of the new painting which has been produced by local artist, Rmer One, on the side of The Health Centre of Traditional Chinese Medicine building owned by Mr Pak Hong Lam on Tudor Street.

The mural is the newest piece of art in the Tudor Street area where a major regeneration scheme, including commercial, environmental and transport improvements, has recently been completed.

With Welsh Government support via its Transforming Towns and Active Travel initiatives as well as Cardiff Council investment, the scheme has delivered a pleasant and welcoming environment for businesses, residents and the wider community with colourful new frontages to shops, new paving, street furniture and lighting and new green infrastructure, promoting opportunities for biodiversity and improved air quality.

A new bus island facilitating bus travel into Central Square and the wider city centre, a new two-way, segregated cycle lane, wider pavements and improved pedestrian crossings have all helped to enhance the local environment along Tudor Street.

As part of the multi-million pound regeneration programme, nearby Tudor Lane was also given a mini facelift with a bright and colourful artwork adorning its walls, new signage at its entrances, bright and vibrant lighting column banners and street lighting improvements as well as traffic calming measures.

The idea for the waterlily mural was chosen by Mr Lam, before Rmer One, the creator of other well-known city murals including Gary Speed on Leckwith Road and Cardiff’s ‘Mona Lisa’ in Butetown, designed and then painted the elegant flower surrounded by lush green lilypads.

In a collaboration project with the University of South Wales, Rmer One was also the talent behind the mural on the side of the former Transport Club, which is now the home of Sustainable Studios, an artist-led provider of affordable studio space, on Tudor Street. The art was designed by a USW student and then painted by Rmer One.

A council spokesperson said: “Following major investment in the regeneration of this part of Riverside to create a vibrant and thriving shopping district for residents and visitors, Tudor Street is now a riot of colour, from the multi-toned shops and businesses to the distinctive artwork that has been created over the past few years. Rmer One’s new mural is a wonderful addition to this bright and bustling area of the city centre.”

To showcase their products, the businesses and makers on Tudor Lane will be holding another open day on Sunday June 23 (11am – 5pm). Everyone welcome.
