Weekend road closures are set to return to Malpas Road in Newport as the council continues a major resurfacing programme.

Newport City Council has confirmed two further phases of work will take place in April, building on resurfacing already carried out in February and March.

The latest work will cover both sides of Malpas Road, from the southernmost entrance to Goodrich Crescent near the Crindau Constitutional Club up to approximately 62 Malpas Road.

The scheme will be carried out over two full weekend closures. The first is scheduled from 8pm on Friday, April 10 until 5am on Monday, April 13. The second will take place from 8pm on Friday, April 24 until 5am on Monday, April 27.

If work cannot be completed by the Monday morning deadline, the road will reopen before closing again on the Monday night under full closure. The council said it will provide updates via its social media channels if additional work is required.

All timings remain subject to change due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the works, but vehicle access in the area will be restricted. Access to Goodrich Crescent and Walford Street will be available via the M4 junction 26 roundabout.

Drivers heading to the Brynglas area will be able to use routes via Ross Street and Pant Road from junction 26, as well as Redland Street via the Harlequin roundabout.

Residents and businesses close to the works will receive letters with detailed information about access and parking arrangements.

All other traffic will need to follow signed diversion routes, using M4 junctions 25, 25a, 27 or 28 to reach the city centre. Motorists are being urged to plan ahead before travelling through the area.

Bus services that normally use Malpas Road will also be affected, with passengers advised to check directly with their service provider for the latest updates.

The council said further weekend closures are planned as part of the wider scheme, with dates to be confirmed in due course, and thanked residents and visitors for their patience while the improvements are carried out.
