Members of the public are invited to share their views on plans for new build accommodation for The Court School.

The Pre-Application consultation marks the next stage in the development to increase the capacity of the school by relocating and rebuilding it across two sites.  One would be located on land to the south of Fairwater Primary Schoolon Wellwright Road, the other would besouth of Pen Y Bryn Primary School at Dunster Roadin Llanrumney.  This would utilise land at the current St Mellons CiW Primary School, following its relocation to new build accommodation located at the St Edeyrns development.

Members of the public will be provided with the opportunity to have theirsay on both parts of the scheme, before a planning application is submitted to Cardiff Council’s Planning Committee in November this year.

If plans are progressed, the new school would grow from 42 to 74 places, with 36 pupils on each site from the 2025-26 academic year, helping tomeet the city’s demand for primary age specialist provision. Both sites would boast a range of comprehensive facilities including Multi-use games areas, sports and soft play areas, sports pitches and horticultural areas, delivered under Cardiff Council and Welsh Governments Band B Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme.

    Proposals include:

    • construction of two new single storey school buildings at each of theFairwater and Llanrumney sites
    • creation of new outdoor amenity areas, multi-use games areas, play-spaces and sports provision
    • landscaping, car parking, drainage and associated works
    • demolition of the existing buildings associated with the St Mellons Church in Wales Primary School (Llanrumney site)

Cabinet Member for Education, Employment and Skills, Cllr Sarah Merry said: “Significant plans are underway toaddress the shortfall in additional learning needs provision required across Cardiff as we embark on our most radical transformation of the provision seen in recent years.

“Relocating and rebuilding The Court School over two sites willimprove the standard of facilities whilstproviding more places for children in need of specialist provision.By co-locating the school with mainstream primary schools willallow for sharing of good practicebetween schools and help tosupport opportunities for pupils to benefit from mainstream environments.

“This public consultation is the next step to delivering excellent, modern amenities and I encourage people to come forward and have their say to help shape the plans that will support the schemes development.”

The Pre-Application consultation runs for 28 days from Wednesday 28 September until Wednesday 19,October 2022.

Public drop-in sessions will take place at:

    • Fairwater Hub address Wednesday5th October 2022 at 3.00pm – 6.00pm
    • Llanrumney Hub address Thursday 6th October 2022 at 3.00pm – 6.00pm

St Mellons CiW Primary School is relocating to brand-new accommodationlocated at the St Edeyrns development as part of astrategic solution to rebalance primary school provision in parts of North East Cardiff. This will help to addressthe issue ofsurplus primary school places in the Llanrumney area as well as the need for additional places in Old St Mellons and parts of Pontprennau, when the St Edeyrn’s housing development is complete.

Subject to planning and procurement, construction of The Court School is expected to start in Autumn 2023.
