Following lots of hard work, the suggestions were whittled down to four before they all voted on their favourite.
Lisa Bowden, currently head of Monnow who will lead the new school, said: ““The children are thrilled to announce the name of their new school as Pont Y Gamlas. The pupils played a key role in choosing the name, researching our local area to ensure it reflects the rich history and heritage of our community.
“The canal, which runs alongside the new school site, became a central theme—symbolising connection and collaboration, as it merges the Brecon and Monmouth canals. The bridge represents unity and the exciting future ahead for learners and the wider community.
“This is a fantastic example of pupil voice in action, with Monnow and Millbrook pupils working together to make sure every child had a say.”
Construction work on the former Millbrook site is due to begin in autumn next year and is expected to be completed in 2028.
Councillor Deb Davies, Newport City Council’s cabinet member for education and early years, said: “It is important the children feel an integral part of the new school so I’m delighted that they have been instrumental in deciding its name.
“We are looking forward to work beginning on the new building next year and all three to 11-year-olds in the area being able to go to one school that will offer a first-class and modern learning environment.
“I would like to thank all the pupils, staff, governors and parents for their patience as this project progresses. It will be worth the wait.”
Initially, Pont Y Gamlas Primary School will operate from two locations, the current Monnow Primary School site, and Brynglas where Millbrook moved after the discovery of structural problems in the Bettws building.
From September, all children attending nursery to year four classes will attend the Monnow site with older pupils in years five and six travelling to Brynglas until the new building opens.
